Our theme this year will explore what holiness is and what its implications are for all of us who are trying to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

Right after the beginning of World War II, the great British writer, Graham Greene, published the novel The Power and the Glory (1940) which attracted a very avid readership. Near the end of this riveting novel, Greene says this of his protagonist: “He knew now that at the end there was only one thing that counted—to be a saint.” Not the kind of statement you’d expect to   encounter at the end of a novel, but it is a thought-provoking and challenging statement.

Even people who are believers often look at the saints as rather distant people, people fundamentally different from most of us. That is unfortunate because saints, even those officially recognized as such by the Church, are real people who lived in the same world we live in and somehow discovered there the path that leads to holiness and found the courage to engage in that path themselves, discovering it as they went along.

There is much to learn from the saints about what holiness means and demands. Those willing to learn from them will make astonishing discoveries. Come and join us and explore some of the most important things the saints are ready, even eager, to teach us. This will benefit us no matter where we are on our life journey.
